By Gareth Davies For Mailonline. It took firefighters more than three hours to free a woman whose leg got trapped in a tiny utility hole without a cover. The incident took place in the city of Popayan, in the south-west Colombian region of Cauca. The woman, identified as Yurani Burbano, was holding her baby in her arms when she got her leg trapped in the hole. Firefighters took more than three hours to free a woman whose leg got trapped in a small utility hole without a cover.
Fortunately, the baby was not injured in the incident. Firefighters used special equipment in order to break the concrete around the small opening. The woman was shown wearing a mask and waiting patiently to be freed. Meanwhile, a group of paramedics were attending to her as well as monitoring her vital signs.
According to local media, the incident is another example of the terrible state of city infrastructure and especially of the gas service in the city who were reportedly responsible for the utility hole. Adults, kids, and animals have been victims of broken manholes or utility holes without covers.
Cars and other vehicles are also at risk of being damaged when driving over them. According to local media, last year the government lost around million COP , GBP in Popayan alone due to the theft of the covers of manholes and utility holes.
There are many maintenance holes in their networks without covers in the area because thieves steal them in order to resell the metal, according to firefighters.
